Who are our Volunteer Advocates?
Victim Services volunteers are members of our community who have chosen to donate their time, energy and skills because they share a concern for individuals who have been affected by crime and/or trauma.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer with Cardium Region Victim Services, there is two ways to volunteer, as an advocate or as a board member.
What is the role of an Advocate?
We are looking for mature adults who are committed, nonjudgemental and caring individuals. These front line service providers work directly with victims of trauma and crimes, as well as family members.
Volunteer Advocates provide emotional support, information and referrals to victims, victim's families and witnesses.
Due to our volunteers have a close working relationship with RCMP members, all Advocates must obtain an enhanced RCMP Security Clearance.
Advocates must also complete the mandatory Solicitor General Basic Advocate E-Learning Training, which includes information and instruction on the Criminal Justice System, Advocate Safety, Crisis Intervention, Suicide Prevention and Self Care before serving as a active volunteer. Advocates also attend local and Provincial training, events and conferences, as they are available. Such as: Domestic Violence, Bullying, Cyber Bullying, Dealth Notification Protocol, Stalking and Harrassment.
Volunteer Advocates must:
- At least 18 years or older
- Actively participate in Basic Training and ongoing training, including monthly meetings
- Complete the security clearance
- Commit to serving as a Cardium Region Victim Services Advocate for at least one year
- Have a valid Alberta Driver's Licence
